Chess has
been proven to be a useful life tool which reinforces many of the skills which
students can utilize throughout their academic years and beyond. Chess will
develop analytical and logical thinking, concentration and decision making
skills. Furthermore, students will develop their creativity and imagination as
they learn about time management. Chess will be instrumental in self-motivation
and self-confidence in a fun, relaxed and encouraging environment.
The instructor will begin the program by providing a solid foundation, emphasizing on fundamental skills needed to grow as a chess player. These include:
- Proper piece and board set-up
- Value of each piece
- Algebraic Notation
(method of recording and describing moves in chess)
- Basic Opening
Principles
Once the students have acquired the knowledge stated above,
the instructor will continue to build and hone on different tactics and
strategies. The students will review Grandmaster's games which show how to make
use of the tactics and strategies they have learned. Each day the students will
have the opportunity to play and develop the skills they have been taught. The
instructor will be able to give the students instant feedback on their games so
that the students will learn from their mistakes.
